"Shrimp" by Luo Yuxiang
This painting, created by Luo Yuxiang, a Luoyang-based artist known for his deep dedication to the study of bird and flower paintings, showcases his profound skill in this "Shrimp" themed work. Unlike Geng Baogui’s similar subject, Luo Yuxiang’s composition is more focused on the left side, leaving the right side open for an inscription.
In the painting, four shrimp are depicted: one positioned in the upper half, while the remaining three cluster together in the lower half, all seemingly crawling downward as if moving toward a shared goal. The composition’s balance is enhanced by the carefully placed negative space on the right, where the artist has inscribed a poem: “...As the east wind blows through the night and raindrops fall, the river swells with fresh water, where fish and shrimp grow in abundance.” This verse evokes a scene where the rain nourishes the river, bringing new life to its waters.
This piece reflects the artist's love for nature and his deep understanding and continuation of traditional Chinese culture.
