Artwork

Created by Zeng Hongjie, the current president of the Contemporary Chinese Women's Painting Association, this oil painting displays masterful use of lines. The irregular, outward-curving lines vividly capture the peach blossoms blooming under the bright sun, full of vitality and life. The branches of the peach tree are outlined with smooth, strong strokes, symbolizing the resilience of life while adding a sense of dynamic beauty to the composition. The petals, depicted with light and graceful lines, seem to flutter in the breeze, delicately highlighting the flower’s softness and tenderness. The harmonious blend of these lines infuses the entire painting with energy and liveliness.

Color plays a pivotal role in this piece. Zeng employs bold and vibrant colors, with the pink of the peach blossoms contrasting against the blue sky and green leaves in the background. The daring use of warm and cool tones, alongside high saturation, intensifies the visual impact, making the blossoms stand out brilliantly. The bright color palette not only draws attention to the beauty of the peach blossoms but also creates a striking contrast that captivates the viewer. The artist skillfully integrates light and shadow, enhancing the fullness and depth of the peach blossoms, giving them a multi-dimensional appearance.

This oil painting evokes a serene and harmonious atmosphere, where the peach blossoms, set against a backdrop of blue skies and white clouds, possess an especially pure beauty. Through delicate brushwork and rich color choices, the artist vividly conveys the vitality and elegance of the peach blossoms. The entire composition is infused with poetry and artistry, immersing the viewer in a vibrant, living world. The visual effect of this work is not only pleasing to the eye but also invites deep contemplation and limitless imagination about the beauty of nature.

Artist

Zeng Hongjie, born in Nanjing in 1969, graduated from the Art Department of Nanjing Jinling Institute of Technology in 1993. She is currently the President of the Contemporary Chinese Women's Painting Association and the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Contemporary Art News. She is a professional artist residing in Beijing.

Anyone with some knowledge of art history will likely notice the ambition in Zeng Hongjie’s work — a fusion of Eastern and Western styles. Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian pursued similar paths before her. However, Xu Beihong, during his time in Paris, wasn’t particularly interested in Impressionism. Instead, he studied classical oil painting and introduced realistic techniques to Chinese painting, contributing to its evolution. Lin Fengmian, though also integrating Eastern and Western elements, took a different approach. His work adopted Western forms but retained an unmistakable Eastern spirit, aiming more to transform Western painting. These two artists continue to influence Chinese painters to this day, each leaving a lasting mark on the art world.

While perspectives may vary on their respective legacies, artists like Wu Guanzhong, Zao Wou-Ki, and Chu Teh-Chun, influenced by Lin Fengmian, have taken this fusion much further. Their oil paintings may outwardly follow Western styles, but at their core, they are deeply rooted in Eastern philosophy — the harmony between humans and nature, and the simplicity of the Dao. This Eastern philosophy runs deep in their work.

Zeng Hongjie’s paintings follow a similar path to that of Zao Wou-Ki and Chu Teh-Chun. She, too, integrates the traditions of Chinese landscape painting and Eastern aesthetics and philosophy into Western art, exploring the creation of a truly Chinese oil painting. Zeng’s work, however, leans closer to Chu Teh-Chun’s style, with its unpredictable imagery and vivid, dreamlike colors. The key difference lies in Zeng’s emphasis on the natural flow of color. Her paintings bring together ever-changing hues that merge seamlessly, creating a visual impact that captivates the viewer.
