《孤桐》王安石 Lonely Fir -Wang Anshi

天质自森森,孤高几百寻。
凌霄不屈己,得地本虚心。
岁老根弥壮,阳骄叶更阴。
明时思解愠,愿斫五弦琴。
Nature itself is dense and vast,
Standing alone, reaching hundreds of feet at last.
It soars to the sky, never bending its pride,
Yet its roots are humble, with nothing to hide.
With age, its roots grow stronger still,
Its leaves provide shade from the sun's fierce thrill.
In brighter times, it wishes to ease its mood,
Hoping to be carved into a five-stringed lute.

In the heart of an esteemed gallery, one encounters a masterpiece that transcends time and space: the calligraphy piece titled "孤桐" by the Song Dynasty poet, Wang Anshi. This artwork is not just a mere representation of words on paper, but a profound reflection of nature's grandeur and the spirit of resilience.

The piece unfolds with the phrase "天质自森森," painting a vivid image of nature's inherent vastness and density. The subsequent lines, "孤高几百寻," evoke the towering stature of the lone fir tree, standing tall and reaching hundreds of feet into the sky. This tree, symbolic of unwavering strength and determination, refuses to bend even when it soars to the greatest heights, as expressed in "凌霄不屈己."

Yet, beneath this towering might lies a heart of humility. "得地本虚心" speaks of the tree's rootedness and its intrinsic humble nature. As time passes, the tree's roots grow even more robust, "岁老根弥壮," and despite the scorching sun, its leaves provide a cooling shade, "阳骄叶更阴."

The final lines, "明时思解愠,愿斫五弦琴," encapsulate the tree's desire to alleviate its solemn mood, wishing to be transformed into a melodious five-stringed lute, resonating with harmonious tunes.

The Allure:

This calligraphy piece is not merely an artistic rendition of a poem but a journey into the soul of nature and the essence of life. The strokes, bold and delicate, capture the spirit of the fir tree, embodying strength, resilience, humility, and a deep-rooted connection to the earth. The fluidity of the script, combined with the profound meaning of the poem, makes this artwork a timeless treasure.

For the discerning collector, "孤桐" is more than just an acquisition; it's an embodiment of ancient wisdom, a testament to nature's grandeur, and a reflection of life's profound truths. This piece promises to be a conversation starter, a source of inspiration, and a cherished heirloom for generations to come.
